Grant Selection Criteria

Eligible projects should:

  1. Focus on at least one of our Priority Countries and Focus Areas.
  2. Address a significant need. Potential partners should refer to recent data to demonstrate why the project is needed.
  3. Be based on evidence. Potential partners will be asked to provide evidence of the effectiveness of the approach that they would like to adopt in a similar context.
  4. Be sustainable. Potential partners must present a realistic assessment of the sustainability of the proposed project and report thereon.
  5. Represent value for money i.e. economical, efficient, and effective. Wherever possible, should indicate how the costs of the proposed project compare to similar projects and show that the interventions they intend to implement are cost-effective.
  6. Have measurable target outputs and outcomes. Potential partners should provide clear plans for monitoring and evaluating achievement against agreed targets. Project targets must be specific, measurable, realistic and time-bound.
  7. Be likely to achieve impact.

The Charity will not fund:

  • Research.
  • Projects seeking to alleviate suffering resulting from natural or man-made disasters, including the delivery of food aid or shelter. The Charity’s focus is on long-term development work.
  • Applications relating to the promotion of religious or political causes, general appeals or circulars, individual sponsorship, events or conferences.

Focus Areas
 1. Health: we will consider proposals for projects that address one or more of the main causes of child mortality:

  • New-born health
  • Pneumonia
  • Diarrhoeal diseases
  • Malaria
  • Malnutrition
  • Water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). Potential partners should note that they will be asked to provide evidence of having achieved long-term sustainability in previous WASH projects.

We are keen to improve the level of care in our Priority Countries. For that reason, we welcome applications for projects that will train
government health-care workers and/or improve family and community care.

To see some examples of the health-related projects we support, click on the above issues (where appropriate).

 2. Education: we will consider education-related proposals backed by compelling evidence of the chosen approach’s effect on learning
     outcomes.

 3. Poverty: we believe that addressing the above issues will directly or indirectly help to relieve poverty.

We will consider projects that will be implemented in stable areas in any of the following countries:
